It is a short-acting selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and the active substance of Priligy. Unlike SSRIs used for depression, it is taken only on demand before anticipated sex, never as a continuous daily treatment.

How it works

Dapoxetine blocks the reuptake of the chemical messenger serotonin by nerve cells. The EU product information explains that ejaculation is controlled by a reflex centre in the spinal cord under the influence of the brain, and that dapoxetine's effect in premature ejaculation is presumed to come from boosting serotonin's action in this pathway. It is designed to be used before anticipated sex rather than to build up in the body over time.

  • Must NOT be combined with MAOIs, thioridazine, other SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants or other serotonergic products such as triptans, tramadol, linezolid, lithium, L-tryptophan or St John's Wort.
  • Must not be used with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole or ritonavir, or with moderate or severe liver impairment.
  • The EU product information says it should not be used by men with erectile dysfunction who are taking PDE5 inhibitors, because of reduced tolerance to standing up (orthostatic hypotension).
  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs: alcohol increases the risk of fainting and injury, and serotonergic recreational drugs can cause serious reactions.
  • Do not drive or use machinery if you feel dizzy, drowsy or faint.
  • Not for women, anyone under 18, or men aged 65 and over (efficacy and safety not established).
