What is Vilitra?

Vilitra is a generic version of vardenafil, a PDE5 inhibitor used to support erections in men with erectile dysfunction. Vardenafil sits alongside sildenafil and tadalafil as one of the well-established treatments in this class. As a generic, Vilitra contains the same active molecule as the branded vardenafil product.

Like all PDE5 inhibitors, vardenafil helps the blood vessels in the penis relax during sexual arousal so an erection can form and hold. It does not create desire and works only with stimulation.

How vardenafil works

Vardenafil blocks the PDE5 enzyme, supporting the natural blood-flow response to arousal. Its onset and duration sit broadly in a similar territory to sildenafil — generally faster and shorter than tadalafil — which makes it a useful alternative for men who do not get on well with other PDE5 inhibitors or who find their side effects troublesome.

  • Typically takes effect within roughly half an hour to an hour.
  • A relatively focused window of action.
  • Some men tolerate vardenafil better than other options, and vice versa.

Who might use it

Vardenafil is a reasonable choice for many men with erectile dysfunction, and it is sometimes preferred by those who experienced side effects with sildenafil. As always, response varies from person to person, so the best option is often found through guided trial. Explore the alternatives in our erectile-dysfunction range.

Safety information

  • Never combine with nitrates or poppers. Vardenafil with nitrate heart medicines or amyl nitrite can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
  • Vardenafil can affect heart rhythm (QT interval), so it warrants caution alongside certain antiarrhythmics and other medicines — disclose everything you take.
  • Priapism lasting more than four hours is a medical emergency.
  • Men with significant heart disease, low blood pressure, or certain eye conditions should be assessed first.
  • Stop and seek help for chest pain or sudden vision or hearing changes.

Common side effects

Usually mild and short-lived:

  • Headache and flushing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Indigestion
  • Dizziness

Getting the best from it

  • Read the patient information leaflet before your first dose.
  • Allow enough time for it to take effect.
  • Note that very fatty meals can slow onset.
  • Keep alcohol modest and ensure genuine arousal and a relaxed setting.

How it compares

Vardenafil and sildenafil are broadly comparable in onset and duration, while tadalafil is the long-acting outlier. If your priority is a longer window, tadalafil may appeal; if you simply did not tolerate sildenafil well, vardenafil is worth discussing. Our Tadalafil vs Sildenafil guide covers the long-versus-short question, and you can view all three ingredients in shop all.

The bottom line

Vilitra is a generic vardenafil tablet for erectile dysfunction and a solid alternative within the PDE5-inhibitor class, particularly for men who did not get on with sildenafil. It shares the strict nitrate warning common to all these medicines, and vardenafil's effect on heart rhythm adds a reason to disclose your full medication list. A short check with a doctor or pharmacist will confirm it suits you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Vilitra and Viagra?+

Vilitra contains vardenafil, while Viagra contains sildenafil; both are PDE5 inhibitors that work in a similar way. Some men tolerate one better than the other, which is why having alternatives is useful.

How long does Vilitra take to work?+

Vardenafil usually takes effect within about 30 to 60 minutes, though a very fatty meal can slow this down. It still requires sexual arousal to produce an erection.

Is vardenafil better than sildenafil?+

Neither is universally better; they are broadly comparable in onset and duration, and the right choice depends on how you respond and tolerate each. A doctor or pharmacist can help you decide.

Can men with heart conditions take Vilitra?+

Anyone taking nitrate heart medicines must avoid vardenafil entirely, and vardenafil can affect heart rhythm, so a careful assessment is essential. Always disclose your full medication list and any heart history.
