What does Viagra actually do? How sildenafil works, explained
Summary
Summary: Viagra (sildenafil) improves blood flow into the penis so that, with arousal, you can get and keep an erection. It doesn't create desire or work without arousal. Here's exactly what it does, what it doesn't, and how to use it.

"What does Viagra do?" deserves a clear, honest answer β because the biggest cause of disappointment is misunderstanding what the medicine is for. Viagra, and generics like Kamagra and Cenforce, do one job very well. Here's exactly what that job is.
What Viagra does
Viagra's active ingredient, sildenafil, blocks an enzyme called PDE5. During arousal, the body relaxes blood vessels in the penis; PDE5 normally reverses that. By inhibiting PDE5, sildenafil helps those vessels stay relaxed so blood flows in and stays, producing and maintaining an erection β but only when arousal starts the process.
What Viagra does NOT do
It does not create desire β it's not an aphrodisiac. It does not produce an automatic erection without arousal. And it does not directly make you last longer (that's premature ejaculation, treated by dapoxetine β see does Viagra make you last longer). It amplifies your natural arousal response; it doesn't replace it.
How quickly and how long
It works in 30β60 minutes (15β30 for the oral jelly), on a lighter stomach, and lasts around four hours β a window in which arousal can produce an erection, not a four-hour erection. Tadalafil lasts far longer (up to 36 hours) if duration matters β see how long does Viagra last.
Who it helps
Men with erectile dysfunction β difficulty getting or keeping an erection β which is very common and very treatable. It's helped the majority of men since the pivotal 1998 trial. If ED is new, it's also worth a check-up, because it can be an early sign of vascular disease.
Using it well and safely
Take it with genuine arousal, on a lighter stomach, easy on alcohol. Never with nitrates or poppers. Medical advice for heart, liver or kidney conditions. One dose per 24 hours. The full pharmacology is in the complete Kamagra guide.
